William Lane was living in Somerset County, New York as noted in the 1830 census, before he moved west and settled in Hillsdale County late in that decade  acquiring, a government grant for land.  About 1846 William Lane then sold this land and migrated a bit further west and became a pioneer in Banfield in Barry County, Michigan.  His residence there was the first ever frame built home in the area.  That home was handed down through the family for nearly 100 years after it was built.  He also donated the land that the Banfield Cemetery in Barry County, Michigan is located on.
